A Kadıköy classic: Fenerbahçe 4-1 Galatasaray
Fenerbahçe, founded in 1907.
Galatasaray, founded in 1905.
Since their existence these two teams have been greatest rivals in the Turkish football league. Today, encounters between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are counted among the most important football events in the world.
When this evening both teams set foot on the pitch of the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Kadıköy, Istanbul, the Fenerbahçe players advanced with the confidence of the last 9 years. Since 1999, Fenerbahçe remain unbeaten at home ground against their archrival Galatasaray. And Galatasaray, once again, did not manage to change this course.
In fact, matters stood better for Galatasaray as they had hoped for, as the “Yellow-Reds” took the lead with Cassio Lincoln after only two minutes. But Fenerbahçe were quick to respond with Selçuk Şahin:
1-1 after just 6 minutes of play!
The more than 50,000 spectators at Şükrü Saracoğlu – which will host the UEFA Cup final in May 2009 – were sure to enjoy a tremendous night of passionate football. And for sure, they did not fall short of their expectations! At half-time Fenerbahçe were leading 2-1 after Emre Aşık’s own goal in the 28th minute. Diego Lugano advanced the lead in the 49th minute. And two minutes into stoppage time Deivid De Souza put the final touch with a wonderful shot, sending the ball to the inner post and deviating it into the net: 4-1

With this win Fenerbahçe advance to 16 points in the Turkcell Süper Lig, and Galatasaray remain at 17 points. Next week Fenerbahçe will be taking on Ankaraspor – surprisingly second placed in the league – in their efforts to gain on Trabzonspor, who are presently at the top.
