Eurobasket 2009
The European Basketball Championship, carried out in Poland, has just closed its doors last Sunday with Spain reaching for the cup for the first time in its history. The last world champion has thus managed to uphold his high level of playing even though things did not look very bright for the tournament’s favourites after the first game. Spain started with a loss against Serbia (66-57). Ironically, it was just this same Serbia that Spain encountered at the final in Katowice, this time finishing the crucial 40 minutes with an overwhelming 85-63 win.
Turkey, who started brilliantly into the championship by winning the first five matches, competed against the finalists Spain and Serbia in the second round’s group F and succeeded in beating both teams (63-60 and 64-69, respectively). But then one unfortunate slip against Slovenia (67-69) ended all of Turkey’s hopes of reaching for the title. Finally, Turkey, who will host the Basketball World Championship in 2010, terminated but at the 8th place.
Hopefully, you enjoyed the past two weeks.
